Cousino Macul Winery

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Yesterday I visited a winery called Cousino Macul, just on the edge of Santiago.  It is possibly the oldest winery in the Americas (a point of much contention, of course), and the only one that is still family owned.  I learned quite a bit about both traditional and modern wine production, and tasted some great wines.

Went on a nice walk through Bellavista today with my classmate Annette.  We saw some wonderful things in the streets.

Oh, home…

Feeling more than a little bit homesick today.  At times, I forget how quickly our hard felt realities become piecemeal anecdotes.  Our present is so present it seems solid enough to stand on.  But, all that surefooted confidence is lost in a pause – every time, trumped by the moment of reflection.  I catch glimpses of that strength of presence, fleeting memories won over in my little fight against time’s passage, and remember a little bit of the future I saw in my past.  Did it look much like this?

I spent a peaceful afternoon with these beautiful women in my life a few days before I left town… there will be someone new to know when I get home.

La Pequeña Gigante

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Yesterday I witnessed the last day of the spectacle that the Chileans refer to as the “Pequeña Gigante,” who came to Santiago with her Tío Escafandra.  I have seen few crowds comparable in size – the streets were overrun with people waiting hours to see the incredible performance put on by the mechanical marionette street theatre company, Royal De Luxe.  Rumor has it, the crew will come to the United States this year, likely to New York City.  I hope it’s true.
