La Piojera

Something tells me a bar named after headlice could never see success in the north, but it sure sounds endearing in Spanish.  I’ve heard that this hole in the wall next to the Mercado Central can get pretty rowdy at night, but during the afternoon it was quite tranquil, and my classmates and I spent several hours there talking and listening to the impromptu jam session at the next table.  I was surprised to learn that Mexican music is quite popular in rural Chile – and also, by default, at La Piojera.

El Centro

Yesterday I visited the center of Santiago and learned quite a lot about Chilean seafood, which as it turns out is delicious, and a bit about the country’s history and architecture as well.  The center is certainly the most chaotic part of the city I’ve been to so far – a mix of religious and folk tradition with modern globalized commerce, as well as people from every age group and social class.  I imagine this place would never look the same twice.

I went for a walk in the park today in the center of Santiago.  The weather was perfect and I met several really nice local folks along the way.

Los Dominicos

Recently went out to Los Dominicos to check out the church and market there.  It’s certainly the nicest market I’ve seen thus far in Chile – everything is of really high quality and many of the artisans work on site in their shops.  I was surprised to find a lot of pets for sale as well.  Successfully resisted the urge to take home several animals.
